Why do I offer rhinoplasty?
If you have an imbalance in the size, width or shape of your nose, it can affect your overall facial harmony. My commitment? Years of training to master the art of rhinoplasty and ensure your satisfaction and happiness with your entire appearance.
What is a rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure intended to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose while correcting functional problems. By correcting problems related to the shape, size and symmetry of the nose, rhinoplasty aims to create a nose that harmonises with the rest of the facial features. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, rhinoplasty also serves to improve the functionality of the nose by resolving breathing difficulties due to injury or congenital abnormalities.
Important aspects and structures
Primary rhinoplasty targets various aspects of the nose and its underlying structure.
- Length and projection of the nose
- Hump
- Widened nasal bones
- Septal deviation (crooked nose and airway obstruction)
- Nasal airway (obstruction)
- Nostrils (flaring)
- Tip of the nose (boxy, droopy, bulbous)
- Columella (hanging or retracted)
- Angle between the nose and the upper lip
Who is suitable for a rhinoplasty?
If you are in good physical shape, do not smoke and have realistic expectations of the result of the rhinoplasty, you are suitable for this procedure. If you are considering surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, it is advisable to wait until your facial growth is complete, as this can significantly affect both the function and appearance of your nose. An exception applies: if you have a facial birth defect, such as a facial cleft, early intervention may be advisable.
Preparing for a rhinoplasty
During the consultation, I will carefully review your medical history, including previous surgeries. I will examine your nose inside and out and take photos to better plan and understand your goals. I will advise you to stop certain medications or supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding before and after the procedure. Sometimes I also ask you to bring photos to understand your aesthetic desires or I perform a virtual simulation. This collaborative process ensures a tailored approach to achieve the best rhinoplasty results.
Open vs. closed technique
Open and closed rhinoplasty are two different surgical approaches to nose reshaping, each with their own advantages and considerations.
Closed rhinoplasty
During closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils and do not leave any visible scars. This method is preferred by patients who want small changes such as removal of a bump or a slight change in the tip of the nose. Although closed rhinoplasty offers faster recovery and less swelling, it can limit the surgeon’s visibility and control during the procedure.
Open rhinoplasty
During an open rhinoplasty, an additional small external incision is made on the underside of the nose (columella), which allows direct access to the internal structure of the nose. This method allows for more precise changes and is therefore ideal for complex procedures, such as shaping the tip of the nose or for reconstructive purposes. Although the cut leaves a small scar, it usually heals very well and unnoticeably. Ultimately, the decision between open and closed rhinoplasty depends on the specific goals of the surgery and your individual needs.
The process of your rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure often takes two to three hours, although more complex cases may require more time. The incisions are carefully hidden inside the nose or along its natural contours so that only minimal traces of the procedure are visible. It is important that you arrange transportation after the procedure. The correct performance of rhinoplasty is based on published techniques, but it also requires an artistic hand. An experienced surgeon should have both precise surgical skills and a strong sense of aesthetics. Because every nose and rhinoplasty is unique, there is no “standard recipe” for the procedure.
Recovery and result
After rhinoplasty, there is usually some mild pain, bruising, and swelling, especially around the eyes, which can last up to two weeks. Mild swelling may last six to twelve months, and a nasal splint may be necessary for the first week. I recommend that you allow at least three weeks for recovery before returning to strenuous activity. You may experience mild pain, light bleeding, or a feeling of constipation in the first week. Results gradually become more noticeable as the swelling subsides, with final results taking up to a year to appear (two years for revisions). To optimize healing, I provide individual instructions for post-operative treatment, including scar care. Patients with realistic expectations regarding their nose structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age are generally satisfied with their improved appearance. Together we will closely monitor recovery and address any concerns.
Non-surgical rhinoplasty
Non-surgical rhinoplasty offers an alternative to traditional surgery. It involves using injectable fillers such as hyaluronic acid to reshape the nose without incisions and the associated risks. This procedure is temporary and reversible, so it can be adapted to future changes. It is particularly suitable for treating smaller irregularities on the bridge of the nose such as bumps and depressions.
