Wofür dient eine Augenlidstraffung?
Often viewed as the window to the soul, the eyes play a crucial role in individuality, beauty and self-expression. Unfortunately, they are also the first area of the face to be affected by the aging process and are therefore an important indicator of it. Whether due to sagging upper eyelids or baggy lower eyelids – even a rested and healthy lifestyle cannot always help the youthful glow of the eyes.
What is an eyelid lift?
Eyelid surgery (also known as blepharoplasty or eye lift) is a transformative solution that not only improves overall facial aesthetics but also significantly expands the field of vision. Women who notice signs of aging earlier may undergo eyelid surgery in their thirties, while men typically consider it in their forties. These procedures eliminate the tired look and replace it with a refreshed, post-vacation look, which has a profound impact on facial attractiveness.
Eyelid surgery is a precise procedure that removes excess fat, skin and muscle from both the upper and lower eyelids. This surgery corrects problems such as drooping upper eyelids and puffiness under the eyes, which contribute to an old and tired appearance and can sometimes affect vision. By subtly and effectively correcting these problems, eyelid surgery offers the opportunity to achieve a more youthful appearance without the noticeable surgical scars. Whether performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, eyelid surgery proves to be a versatile solution for rejuvenating the eye area and restoring a refreshed and revitalized aesthetic.
Who is suitable for the operation?
In a consultation we will determine whether you are suitable for the procedure. Good physical and mental health as well as realistic expectations determine suitability. Most of us who want to undergo such surgery are over 35 years old. However, people who have drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes in their family can also opt for the procedure earlier, as their eyes usually show these undesirable features at a younger age.
Certain medical conditions such as thyroid problems, dry eyes, cardiovascular disease and diabetes can make the procedure more difficult. If you have a history of retinal detachment or glaucoma, caution is advised and it is important to consult your ophthalmologist before the procedure.
Before you decide, you should carefully consider your expectations and discuss them with us to ensure they match the surgical options.
What should you expect from your consultation?
During the consultation, you will receive comprehensive information about the procedure, including limitations and risks. This is a good time to talk openly about your specific needs and concerns so that we can fully understand your expectations and assess whether they are realistic. A thorough examination of your eyelids will assess their shape and identify any asymmetries in order to determine the most appropriate procedure to optimize your results.
To allow for comprehensive planning, be sure to be prepared to discuss your needs and medical history. It is crucial that you provide us with relevant information from your ophthalmologist, along with details about any medical conditions, medication allergies, previous surgeries, medical treatments and current medications. A complete explanation allows us to tailor the surgical plan to your individual needs.
Once the surgical plan is finalised, you will receive personalised pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure you are well prepared for your upcoming procedure. This thorough approach is designed to increase the success and safety of your operation while addressing your individual concerns and goals.
Types of eyelid corrections
Upper and lower eyelid lifts can be performed separately or combined.
Oberlidstraffung
Upper eyelid surgery is a procedure that corrects the problem of sagging eyelid skin. Sometimes removal of excess fat or restoration of the muscles responsible for opening the eyes is necessary. Through fine incisions that are invisible when the eyes are open and barely visible when the eyes are closed, excess skin and other tissue are skillfully removed to restore both the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the eyelids.
Unterlidstraffung
Lower eyelid surgery involves correcting bags under the eyes by repositioning and possibly removing excess fat and skin. In addition, sagging lower eyelids can be treated, which can reveal an excess of white of the eye under the iris (scleral show), thereby improving the overall aesthetic harmony of the eyes.
For lower eyelid surgery, we make the incision directly below the lower eyelash line.
Transkonjunktivale Unterlidstraffung
If there is little skin excess and the need to remove excess fat, we may opt for an alternative approach where we make a hidden incision inside your lower eyelid, called a transconjunctival incision.
Eigenfetttransplantation
In many of our cases, we combine lower eyelid surgery with fat grafting to smooth the eyelid-cheek junction and achieve better results. The fat is usually taken from the abdomen or inner thighs.
The intervention
On the day of the operation you should have someone to accompany you home from the clinic as you will no longer be able to drive yourself afterwards. We will carefully review your surgical plan with you and ensure that you are well prepared for the procedure.
A small amount of anesthetic is administered during the procedure to ensure a pain-free experience. According to the predetermined plan, we make an incision in the agreed area and remove the excess skin. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes for the upper eyelids and one to two hours for the lower eyelids, with the latter usually being performed under general or local anesthesia with sedation. The operation time may be longer if you want to combine eyelid surgery with other treatments.
After the operation is completed, you will be monitored briefly before you go home. You can then concentrate on your recovery.
Recovery and result
After the eyelid surgery, we will provide you with care instructions, including the use of cold compresses and eye drops on the eyelids. Swelling and bruising usually resolve within a few days to weeks, allowing you to return to your usual routine within one to two weeks. Feelings of tension and blurred vision may occur initially but will improve within a week.
Small skin-colored bandages called “steristrips” will be applied, and it is important that you do not rub the eyes with your hands until they are completely healed. The sutures are removed after 5-7 days. Strenuous sports should be avoided for a few weeks. Improvement occurs as soon as the initial swelling subsides, which usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, but complete healing can take up to six months. The eyes can tire easily in the first few weeks and should not be strained with screens and reading books in the first few days. Applying sunscreen is essential for a beautiful scar after removal of the sutures.
