What are pigment spots?
Pigment spots are changes in the skin caused by a localised increase in melanin production (hyperpigmentation). Melanin is the skin’s natural pigment that protects it from UV radiation.
Pigment spots can range from light to dark shades and usually appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, hands, and arms. They are harmless, but many people consider them a cosmetic concern.
Causes and risk factors
The primary cause of pigment spots and hyperpigmentation is UV exposure. Prolonged sun exposure can trigger an overproduction of melanin in the skin.
Risk factors include hormonal changes (e.g., during pregnancy or menopause), certain medications, or a genetic predisposition. Free radicals generated in the skin can also influence pigmentation.
Types of pigment disorders
Pigment spots usually appear as flat, round, or oval discolourations in various shades of brown. Common types include café-au-lait spots, which are coffee-brown in colour, flat, and oval, and can appear in large numbers, sometimes indicating a genetic condition.
Age spots, also known as lentigines, develop from sun exposure and appear as flat brown or black spots. Freckles (ephelides) are usually genetic and are intensified by sunlight, especially in very fair-skinned individuals.
Melasma primarily affects women, often during hormonal changes such as pregnancy, and appears symmetrically on the face with patches ranging from brown to grey tones.
Treatment of hyperpigmentation
Treatment of hyperpigmentation depends on the cause and severity of the discolouration. BBL® HEROic™ allows targeted treatment of pigment spots and other types of pigmentation disorders by fragmenting and breaking down melanin within the affected skin cells.
Dermaceuticals help regulate melanin production and lighten pigment spots. Formulations are particularly effective when they combine tranexamic acid, vitamin B3, antioxidants, and tyrosinase and inflammation inhibitors.
The needle-free biorevitalising peel PRX-T33, containing TCA, hydrogen peroxide, and kojic acid, also promotes skin regeneration, reduces hyperpigmentation, and creates a more even skin tone—without peeling or downtime.
Consistent daily sun protection is also essential to prevent pigmentation spots and to avoid worsening existing discolouration.
