How does redness of the skin develop?
Sensitive skin often tends to redness, which can be exacerbated by dilated blood vessels, a weakened skin barrier, or inflammatory processes. Beyond the classic telangiectasias, this often appears as diffuse redness, making the overall complexion look uneven or unsettled.
What are telangiectasias?
Dilated capillaries, medically known as telangiectasias, often appear as fine, visible vessels beneath the skin. They commonly develop due to a weakness in the connective tissue, which allows the vessels to show through. This results in redness, particularly visible on the face—on the cheeks, nose, or forehead—but can also appear as reddish-blue lines on the legs (commonly known as spider veins).
Causes of telangiectasias
Telangiectasias frequently occur with age, as the skin loses elasticity and blood circulation diminishes. While they may have a hereditary component, lifestyle factors also influence their development. They can be worsened by factors such as UV exposure or hormonal changes. Additionally, alcohol, spicy foods, and extreme temperatures can make them more visible, especially on the face.
To help prevent spider veins on the legs, it is recommended to avoid prolonged sitting or standing. A balanced diet, healthy body weight, and avoiding nicotine also support vascular health.
Types of telangiectasias
Telangiectasias appear in different forms: In couperose, dilated, visible vessels mainly occur on the cheeks and nose, while rosacea, a chronic skin condition, is associated with enlarged capillaries and often blemishes. Spider naevi appear in a star-shaped or web-like pattern, whereas spider veins are reddish-blue vessels particularly visible on the legs.
