Ear pinning – otoplasty
An ear pinning procedure brings the ears into their aesthetically correct shape and position.

Indication
Protruding ears are often caused by a congenital malformation and disturbed growth of the ear cartilage. Although this can be aesthetically disturbing, it does not cause any health problems. Ear correction, also known as otopexy or otoplasty, reshapes the ear cartilage and repositions the ears closer to the head.
Treatment
The procedure is performed through an incision behind the ear, during which part of the ear cartilage is remodelled and fixed with stitches. Occasionally, a small piece of cartilage is also removed to achieve a harmonious shape. Existing asymmetries are taken into account and corrected as best as possible. The operation takes about an hour and a half and is performed under twilight sleep or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age.
Ear correction for children
From around the age of five, the growth process of the auricle is complete, meaning that correction is possible. Children often express a desire for surgery themselves to prevent teasing.
Aftercare and result
The result is visible immediately, but swelling can persist for several weeks to months. A head bandage is worn for the first night after the operation, followed by a headband for 3 weeks at night to protect the ears. After about 2 weeks, the wound behind the ear is largely healed. Time off from school or work for 7 to 10 days is recommended, and sports activities should be avoided for about 4 weeks.
An ear correction can significantly improve your well-being.

Frequently asked questions about otoplasty
How often do we perform ear pinning procedures?
Ear pinning is one of the most common procedures we perform, often several times a week.
Is ear pinning painful?
Ear pinning is usually painless, as I usually perform it under twilight sleep or general anesthesia with additional local anesthetic. Moderate pain and a feeling of pressure may occur after the procedure, but this can be well controlled with painkillers.
Is the result permanent?
The result of ear pinning is permanent, but there is always the possibility that a suture will not hold well and the ear will return to its old shape.
What are the risks of ear pinning?
As with any surgery, ear pinning involves certain risks such as bruising, asymmetry, numbness or infection, but these can be minimised with careful planning and aftercare.
What needs to be considered before and after an ear correction?
We will provide you with detailed written and verbal instructions on what you need to consider before and after an ear correction. Additional general information on pre- and post-operative care can be found in the “For Patients – Resources” section.
When will I be socially presentable again after an otoplasty procedure?
You will usually be fit for socialising after a week. Any bruising and most of the swelling will disappear after about 2 to weeks.
When can I return to sport after an otoplasty?
After an otoplasty, you should avoid sport for 4 weeks, as the ears are very sensitive at first and can otherwise swell considerably.
What does an otoplasty cost?
The costs vary depending on the extent and size of the treatment. The cost of an otoplasty starts at 5 000 CHF. We would be happy to discuss the individual costs in a personal consultation.
Are the costs of an otoplasty covered by health insurance?
In rare cases, the costs of ear pinning are covered by health insurance. However, we offer otoplasties exclusively as a self-pay service.
