Ear pinning – otoplasty

An ear pinning procedure brings the ears into their aesthetically correct shape and position.

Appointment

Indication

Protruding ears are often caused by a congenital malformation and disturbed growth of the ear cartilage. Although this can be aesthetically disturbing, it does not cause any health problems. Ear correction, also known as otopexy or otoplasty, reshapes the ear cartilage and repositions the ears closer to the head.

Treatment

The procedure is performed through an incision behind the ear, during which part of the ear cartilage is remodelled and fixed with stitches. Occasionally, a small piece of cartilage is also removed to achieve a harmonious shape. Existing asymmetries are taken into account and corrected as best as possible. The operation takes about an hour and a half and is performed under twilight sleep or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age.

Ear correction for children

From around the age of five, the growth process of the auricle is complete, meaning that correction is possible. Children often express a desire for surgery themselves to prevent teasing.

Aftercare and result

The result is visible immediately, but swelling can persist for several weeks to months. A head bandage is worn for the first night after the operation, followed by a headband for 3 weeks at night to protect the ears. After about 2 weeks, the wound behind the ear is largely healed. Time off from school or work for 7 to 10 days is recommended, and sports activities should be avoided for about 4 weeks.

An ear correction can significantly improve your well-being.
