What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a transparent, jelly-like substance naturally produced by our bodies. At the molecular level, it consists of complex sugars called glycosaminoglycans. It has wound healing properties and the ability to retain moisture in our skin by binding water molecules. As we age, our innate HA levels decrease, which contributes to the appearance of signs of aging and dry skin. However, there are various methods for supplementing the body’s own HA.

Hyaluronic acid in skin care products and foods

Hyaluronic acid is a widely recognized key ingredient in skin care products, valued for its ability to restore moisture and hydrate the skin. As a humectant, it absorbs water molecules into the skin and thus ensures a healthier complexion. Unfortunately, it only works on the skin on the surface and therefore has to be reapplied every day. The moisturizing effect improves the skin’s firmness and elasticity, which can lead to a reduction in wrinkles over time. Hyaluronic acid is also naturally present in certain foods such as fish and poultry as well as bone broth. Including these foods in your diet can support the body’s production of hyaluronic acid, contributing to overall skin health and vitality.

Hyaluronic acid in aesthetic medicine

In non-surgical aesthetic procedures, hyaluronic acid is often used as a filler to moisturize the skin and reduce wrinkles or to add volume and structure to certain areas of the face. The cross-linking of HA molecules varies and influences aspects such as hydration and lifting effect, elasticity, tissue integration and durability. Choosing an experienced injector with in-depth anatomical knowledge and specialized training is essential for optimal results and safety. In my practice we only use premium brands such as Juvéderm®, Restylane® and PROFHILO® due to their excellent properties.

What can hyaluronic acid be used for?

HA fillers can be used for different areas. It is important to use the right product in the right amount in the right place to avoid complications and a puffy and distorted appearance.

Dissolving hyaluronic acid

It is a myth that HA fillers dissolve on their own. Although they gradually degrade to some extent, they can migrate, especially if they are not placed in the correct tissue plane. Fortunately, in most cases it is possible to reverse hyaluronic acid using an enzyme called hyaluronidase (hylase), which offers a significant safety benefit.

Is hyaluronic acid injection painful?

The discomfort during the injection depends on the injection technique and the injection site. To increase patient comfort during the procedure, local anesthetics or nerve blocks may be used. Additionally, the HA fillers we use are mixed with a numbing solution called lidocaine to reduce pain. To further increase comfort, our patients have the option of using Entonox® (laughing gas) during treatment. Cold packs may be applied after treatment to reduce swelling and bruising.
